Long Way Down

Touratech UK attend the Long Way Down Charity Night and Auction

After spending three months travelling the Long Way Down through Europe and Africa, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman concluded their 15,000 mile adventure in Cape Town, South Africa in August this year. On Thursday 8th November Long Way Down hosted the party of the year in an effort to raise money for lead charity partner UNICEF, as well as CHAS (Children's Hospice Association of Scotland) and Rider's For Health, whom they also supported on their journey.

Held at Evolution in Battersea Park the evening was sponsored by Belstaff, Nissan, Nokia and TOTAL who covered all the costs ensuring 100% of the money taken went to charity. The star-studded event was a night to remember, and an opportunity to raise valuable funds for UNICEF's projects in Africa. Hosted by Ewan and Charley guests, including Elle Macpherson, Jay Kay, Damon Hill, Sharleen Spiteri and James Nesbitt and Touratech UK Managing Director and Dakar Veteron Nick Plumb, sat down to a meal before participating in a charity auction.

The auction, which saw Charlie and Ewan dashing around the room to bully wealthy attendees for bids, helped the total money raised on the evening top £300,000. Amongst the items sold during the auction was a brand new replica of the BMW bike that Ewan and Charley rode on their trip. This bike (which was sold along with a BMW Off-Road Skills course) was made up half like Charleys and half like Ewans bike and was a very popular item which finally went for £50,000 beating the Long Way Down limited edition Nissan Navara that sold for only £42,000.

At the end of the evening guests were able to enjoy exclusive live sets from both The Magic Numbers and Beth Orton.

Touratech Managing Director Nick Plumb said about the show “It was an amazing night. The place was packed and Ewan and Charley were doing a great job of upping the bids including Ewan bidding himself for one item. It was great for Little Brown, the publishers of the Long Way Down book, to invite me, it’s been a great night”

Ewan and Charley, continuously supported by producers/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian, visited 3 sites over the course of their journey in an effort to raise awareness for Long Way Down's charity partners, in particular UNICEF's projects in Africa. Ewan, Charley and the Long Way Down team are committed to raising as much money as possible for children affected by HIV, poverty and conflict in Africa and hope that tonight's fundraising event will go a long way towards achieving that goal.
