Originally one of the first batch of 300 XT660Z Teneres in the UK, this machine was first registered in August 2008, before being shipped to the USA where Jenny Morgan travelled extensively for her series of articles in TBM magazine.
Not only was this the first ever XT660Z on American soil, but during those seven months, the Tenere was proven time and again as an exceptional overland travel machine.
From the pacific northwest to the southernmost tip of the United States (Key West), Jenny travelled solo over 23,000 miles - across every kind of terrain, and in every kind of weather. Notable milestones included the lowest [Badwater Basin, Death Valley] and the highest [Pikes Peak] ‘motorable’ roads in the United States, the infamous Trans-Am Trail, the Mohave Desert, the high passes of the Rocky Mountains, Moab’s famous slickrock trails in Utah, and even the notorious Rubicon Jeep trail in the Sierra Nevada mountains - in all crossing the North American continent from coast to coast, twice.
On her return she had nothing but praise for what was still a showroom specification machine, and which had performed faultlessly - requiring only regular oil and tyre changes.
Having also been impressed with the general dynamics of the machine, she felt with some upgrades to the suspension, wheel-set and engine, the XT660Z could well prove to be a fast and reliable open-class rally bike, continuing the tradition of the previous generation of XT and Tenere rallye machines.
In conjunction with a number of European part manufacturers and product suppliers, this same Tenere became the prototype for many of the now commercially available modifications, and the bike itself was extensively proven over what many still consider to be the toughest overland route of all - from Paris to Dakar, on the 2009 edition of the Heroes-Legend Rally.
